Hotels, Hospitals, Hostels
Hotels, hospitals and hostels have large, recurring hot-water and low-temperature heating loads, making heating the primary near-term heat-pump opportunity in Indian buildings — high occupancy, long operating hours, multiple heating uses and centralised systems that are straightforward to integrate.
The Problem
The gap CRID is closing
Hotels, hospitals and hostels need large amounts of hot water and low-temperature heat every day, and that heat is often supplied by LPG-, PNG- or diesel-fired boilers or by electric-resistance systems. The demand is not marginal or seasonal: it is recurring, concentrated and predictable, spanning showers, laundry, kitchens, cleaning, pools and spas, process water and boiler-feed preheating. These are buildings with high occupancy, long operating hours and multiple simultaneous hot-water and low-temperature heating uses — exactly the profile that makes fossil-fired heating most wasteful and most replaceable.
CRID's Approach
How we're building this
Deploy dedicated air-to-water heat pumps for hot water and low-temperature heating, sized to each building type: hotels and hostels need useful heat at 50–65°C, hospitals at 50–80°C to cover patient and staff bathrooms, laundry, kitchens, CSSD and process-water preheat, and boiler-feed preheat. Where cooling runs simultaneously, heat-recovery heat pumps serve both thermal loads at once — recovering rejected heat to make hot water is a bonus opportunity on the same site. The principle is heating first, heat recovery when available.
Expected Impact
What changes when this lands
The three H buildings are a ready market for clean heating: large recurring hot-water demand, long operating hours, and multiple heating uses at a single site. Converting them from LPG, PNG, diesel and electric-resistance heating to heat pumps removes fossil combustion from buildings that run it every day of the year — and where cooling is simultaneous, recovering rejected heat to make hot water improves the economics further.
