Ethanol Gensets Instead of Diesel Gensets
From single-market petrol blending to a certified, multi-market low-carbon molecule. India has ethanol capacity headroom after E20 and no announced mandate above it — diesel genset replacement is the first demand sink that can absorb it, starting with pilots and aggregation.
The Problem
The gap CRID is closing
India has built ethanol supply at scale, but petrol blending is capped at E20 for now and no mandate above it has been announced as of July 2026. Capacity headroom must therefore move into other green-molecule markets. The problem exists because ethanol policy was designed around mobility: SAF, marine fuels, green chemicals and hydrogen all need molecules, but their standards and demand aggregation are still immature. Meanwhile 151,500 DG units were sold in India in FY2024–25 and 14.7 lakh DG sets above 5 kVA were operating in 2022, running at a fully-loaded electricity cost of ₹25–40/kWh and generating an estimated 5.8 Mt of CO₂ a year — plus PM, NOx, black carbon and noise near homes, hospitals, offices and worksites.
CRID's Approach
How we're building this
Replace diesel where the power need is aggregated, the fuel route can be controlled, and emissions can be measured independently — construction sites, telecom towers, industrial estates and commercial portfolios first. Four steps: demonstrate through 10–20 MW of pilots with verified performance; aggregate 100–200 MW of bankable contracts; standardise fuel and engine certifications and safety protocols; then scale to 40–125 crore litres a year of ethanol demand. Pilots are treated as evidence, not as an assumed win, with UV/IR flame detection, vapour monitoring, ethanol-compatible seals, alcohol-resistant foam and independent lab verification of cost, emissions, reliability and safety incidents.

What changes when this lands
Diesel gensets give India's ethanol capacity its first demand sink beyond petrol blending, worth 40–125 crore litres a year at scale. The switch removes an estimated 5.8 Mt of annual CO₂ along with PM, NOx, black carbon and noise from sites next to homes, hospitals and offices — and it turns ethanol from a single-market blending component into a certified, multi-market low-carbon molecule, opening the path to SAF, marine fuels and green chemicals as those standards mature.
